A programming consultant, user interface designer, and trainer, author David Flanagan certainly seems qualified to help all levels of programmer harness the power of JavaScript. In this authoritative, highly readable book, he delivers on the promise of his credentials.

Flanagan begins by clarifying the JavaScript language, debunking myths such as that it is a non-programmer's version of Java. Not so, the author counters. As he shows in this volume, JavaScript is a highly complex programming language.

Topics in the Core JavaScript section include the lexical structure, variables, functions, and objects, among others. The second section, Client-Side JavaScript, examines its use in Web browsers, events and event handling, dynamic HTML, etc. Flanagan also provides an extensive reference section.

This chatty book is ideal for Web designers who want to add some sparkle to their sites but don't see the need to become virtuoso programmers to do so.

Heinle focuses on providing the JavaScript basics needed for tasks such as controlling and creating windows and frames, and utilizing dynamic images.

Figures are plentiful, and nicely illustrate the text. The author takes care to offer warnings and tips on designing for different browsers as well. And don't ignore the accompanying CD-ROM . It's packed with demos and code from the book, as well as a trial version of Infuse.
