Users of handheld organizers sometimes seem like cultists when asked why they prefer one device over another. Take the PalmPilot, which still ranks as the world's top-selling handheld computer. Devotees rave about its compact size, its multiple features and add-ons, and even (for reasons which escape me) the PalmPilots complex handwriting-recognition alphabet known as Graffiti.

Now they have something else to cheer about: a book that covers every aspect of PalmPiloting, from getting started to synchronizing to browsing the Web and beyond. Pogue's writing style is friendly without being condescending, and his "tips" sections are both helpful and amusing (as when he chronicles his "accidental testing" of what happens when you drop your PalmPilot).

A big bonus is the CD-ROM and appendices: the CD boasts more than 900 programs, Metrowerks' CodeWarrior Lite programming kit, and a trial version of IntelliSync. One appendix covers the top add-on software (from nifty calculators and clocks through cool games and spreadsheets and more), another documents hardware (modems, card scanners, carrying cases), and the third guides you to Pilot-happy Web sites. Up, up, and away, its Pilotmania time!

This beautifully descriptive book is a tribute to the emotional richness that dog ownership can bring to our lives. Knapp documents her acquisiton of Lucille, an "unremarkable" dog in appearance who is nevertheless remarkable in the love, trust, and joy she brings to her owner's life.

In addition to describing how her life with Lucille "so delights me", Knapp delicately probes the intimacy and "emotional closeness" that dog owners often experience with their pets. From doggie daycare to dog therapy, we spend increasing amounts of money on and addition to our dogs. And, as Knapp so lovingly chronicles, they repay us multifold in unconditional love.
