Netsurfer Digest Rate Card

Netsurfer Digest is a popular, general interest online e-zine covering places and resources available on the Internet and the World Wide Web. The Digest is delivered free of charge via e-mail as an HTML file to a subscriber mailing list. It is also placed online at the Netsurfer Digest web site as well as on mirror and redistribution sites around the world. Publication frequency is every 7 to 10 days. Netsurfer Digest has been publishing since June 1994 and is the oldest surviving web based e-zine. The Digest was one of the first online web sites to accept advertising.

1. Banner and Text within Netsurfer Digest - Approximately 100,000 impressions/issue (90,000/issue guaranteed). This consists of a graphic banner, and ad text (up to 3 lines) permanently below section headings or the masthead.

2. Banner and Text on Our Home Page - Like option #1 above but not tied to any single Digest issue. Approximately 30,000 impressions per month (since most of our readers get their issues via e-mail).

3. Netsurfer Focus: Creation of a special resource publication/page - If you are targeting a specific market segment with a well defined interest profile, we can tailor assemble a publication which will interest them. We specialize in assembling online resources into concise and coherent coverage of a topic. Your company will be the sole sponsor, the publication will be e-mailed out to our subscribers and advertised widely on various web indexes (e.g. Yahoo, Lycos), as well as being permanently placed on our web site. It can also be used in print advertising.

RATE NOTES:

  1. Rates effective September 15, 1999 and subject to change without notice. Rates will be honored for existing contracts.
  2. All frequency discounts applicable only to pre-booked placements within 8 weeks of the first ad. That is, if you pre-book your ads and if all your ads run within 8 weeks of each other, you'll get the discount.
  3. Requests for specific position are given consideration but no guarantee is made unless specific position placement has been provided for in the contract.

Payment in full must be received before an ad is run.

Closing Dates

The Digest is published roughly every 7 to 10 days (we're constrained by how long it takes to mail out any given issue). You can always find out the next publication date by calling us and asking.

Advertising copy is due 3 days before publication date.

Cancellations should be made 1 week prior to publication date.

Submission Guidelines: Copy & Graphics

Copy should be plain text or HTML in an e-mail message.

Graphics should be in GIF89a or JPEG format. Animated GIFs are supported. Try to keep your graphic file size under 15K.

Graphics should be e-mailed or sent by FTP. We can also grab graphics from your web site.

Netsurfer supports the standard Web advertising banner sizes, as shown in the table below. We recommend the Full Banner and Full Banner With Nav Bar aspect ratios for best results.

We can support Java and Javascript applets embedded in your ads, but you should not assume that our readers will be connected to the Internet when browsing their issue of the Digest.

Avoid sending us stuff in word processing formats (e.g. no Microsoft Word documents) or oddball encoding (e.g. don't use BinHex, or ZIP) Stick with the universal cross-platform standards and use plain text or UUENCODE.

Rich Media Support

Netsurfer supports most Rich Media technologies, such as Java and Java based technologies (e.g. Enliven), JavaScript, HTML Forms, Shockwave, etc. In most casees the Rich Media ad can be run from your own servers - you have control over content and we simply deliver the ad tag to the users. Contact us if you have questions.

Third Party Ad Serving

Netsurfer fully supports ad tags from major advertising services, such as NetGravity or DoubleClick. We are essentially agnostic about ad tags. You provide the tag, we'll deliver it for you.

Counting Impressions and Hits

Placement of advertising within Netsurfer Digest and Marketplace generates a guaranteed minimum number of impressions based on the current size of our mailing list. Beyond this minimum there is a large, though imprecisely measured, number of readers who receive our publications and mailings through other redistribution web sites, mailing list exploders, and Bulletin Board Systems throughout the world.

Note that measuring hits from Netsurfer Digest is NOT like measuring hits from your average ordinary web site because the Digest is really a mailing list. However, measurement is quite easy. The hits come directly from a users browser to your site, without going through our web server. We can work with your technical representatives to set up special links from your ads to your web site. These links can be used to count only the hits made on your web pages from Netsurfer ads. You can collect your own hit counts using your own favorite tools on your own schedule with no need to have us get involved.

Also note that since we don't charge extra for changing your ads, you can adjust your ad copy/graphics in order to improve the response over the course of an ad campaign.

We can also arrange for what are known as "split ads" where some set of our readers receives one version of the ad, and another set receives another version. The response rates can then be compared and the ad campaign adjusted accordingly.

Privacy Policy

Netsurfer does not sell or rent its mailing lists.

Any demographic survey information which we may collect is only used for aggregate statistical reporting of our readership as a whole. Individual responses are never made public, and in fact we try to make our surveys as anonymous as possible.
