At least it is at the "Death of Rock 'n' Roll" Web site. Jeff Pike wrote a book by that name last fall, and this epic site is the fallout. All the biggies are here of course, Elvis, John, Jim, Jimmy, Janis, Sid, as well as many others. Their music, their lives, and mostly their deaths, excerpted from the book. Gracing these pages is a complete Deathography, a dead rock star calender, and in a fit of anal exuberance a listing of all the dead people connected with the Beatles. Go see for yourself at "http://alfred1.u.washington.edu:8080/~jlks/pike/DeathRR.html".
CAN'T DECIDE ON A MOVIE? TRY THANT'S ANIMATION INDEX
Thant's Animations Index contains 103 links to WWW sites which offer computer generated animations, visualizations, movies and interactive images. New links are added all the time. This is an excellent site that provides a convenient place to watch the Big Bang, Ren and Stimpy, Pearl Jam, and virtual enzymes in action. Hmmm, put them all together and you get another twisted Universe. Don't forget to bring your MPEG viewer. Recommended. "http://mambo.ucsc.edu/psl/thant/thant.html"
GUIDE TO NASA ONLINE RESOURCES
Although only partially completed, the Guide to NASA Online Resources is still a fascinating compendium of scientific, educational, and government resources for the "star struck." A nice feature is the guide to online resources via keyword references, with topics ranging from aerospace and astronomy to planetary and shuttle missions. Features include links to the JPL Information Public Access Computer Site, the Kennedy Space Center World Wide Web, the Space Telescope Science Institute (home of the Hubble Space Telescope Data Archive), and the Catalog of Galactic Supernova Remnants. THE STARS MY DESTINATION: STARSHIP DESIGN PAGE
Have you ever wanted to learn what real ideas exist on the subject of starships? Or do you have some interesting ideas of your own? The Starship Design HomePage is now online, featuring information on various aspects of starship science and engineering. Collaborative design projects and computer simulation contests are planned. THE HANG GLIDING PICTURE SERVER
As the name implies, you'll find hang gliding and paragliding pictures, with inline preview images of each photo. In addition, there are hang gliding movies, related programs for downloading and other interesting links for aviation buffs and adventurists. If we were The media we'd say something clever about the "bird's eye view" or "being above it all", but we're not so we won't. "http://cougar.stanford.edu:7878/HGMPSHomePage.html"
A new service brings Amtrak passenger and other metropolitan commuter train schedules to you online. You can look up schedules using Gopher, or you can ftp complete file/directory structures for Mac or Unix systems. The information is comprehensive, up-to-date, and easy to use, organized by region. Individuals from rec.railroad and The Railroad List (railroad@cunyvm.cuny.edu) are to be thanked for the masochistic work of fanatical transcription. FEDWORLD ON WEB, APPLIES ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO WHITE HOUSE
And about time somebody did. FedWorld started out as a huge (and now hugely popular) BBS containing a large chunk of relatively useful U.S. government red tape (an oxymoron perhaps). Now they've grown up and have a WWW page with links to over 100 U.S. Government information servers with more added daily. Oh yeah, among the flood of info, you can search White House documents using keywords assigned by artificial intelligence software at MIT. We'd try "Whitewater", but we don't want to testify before Congress if caught. "telnet://fedworld.gov/" "ftp://ftp.fedworld.gov/" "http://www.fedworld.gov/"
NUCLEAR PROGRAM WATCHDOG AGENCY GOES ONLINE
The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board now has a presence online. This is the agency which watches over the Department of Energy's nuclear program to make sure that embarrassing accidental releases of nuclear material are kept to a minimum. Their Gopher server lets you see their communications with the Secretary of Energy, a log of their activities, biographies of their members, and their annual report - everything they're doing to keep the DOE toeing the line. Of interest to all nuclear junkies and conspiracy theorists. "gopher://gopher.dnfsb.gov:7070/"
HUGE CENTRAL INDEX FOR ONLINE BOOKS AND TEXTS
Alex, a catalogue of electronic texts on the Net, offers access to more than 700 books and other texts. Author and title lists are available. Hunter Monroe, the man responsible, sees it as part of an effort to unify the indexing of all text on the Internet. We admire the utopian vision. The archive updates itself automatically from sources such as Project Gutenberg, Wiretap, and others. You may also contribute pointers to other sites, specific additions to the catalogue, and error reports by writing to alex@rsl.ox.ac.uk. MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN SERVER NO TIPTOE IN THE TULIPS
The Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG) recently introduced its new WWW server. The site includes a tour of the Garden, the Flora of North America project and over 600,000 WAIS-indexed records in a taxonomic database. The tour is an excellent idea gone bad - instead of a pleasant virtual walk through the gardens, the tour provides information and pictures of the facilities. Botanically disappointing. JESUITS AND SCIENCE HOME PAGE SLOW TO DELIVER
The Science Library of Loyola University of Chicago promises a collection of images and text from rare works in astronomy, cosmology, engineering, mathematics and natural history written by members of the Society of Jesus during the 17th and 18th centuries. We suspect this is highly worthwhile, but to find out you need more patience than our Netsurfers. The home page is huge and takes more time than we were willing to spend to download via modem. We gave up at 300 KB. Check it out, but have a good book at your side or a fast link. "http://www.luc.edu/~scilib/jessci.html"
OKIES ON ICE: TULSA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE
The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office of all places now has public information available via Gopher. Beyond the usual PR, the site provides some fascinating info. It publishes a most-wanted list (you reading this, Billy Wayne, on the lam in southern California?) and Tulsa County Jail statistics. The jail, when we checked, was operating at 100.2 % capacity with a seven-to-one male/female inmate ratio, of whom about one percent were juveniles. Future expansion will include gang information and a list of County Jail inmates. "gopher://galaxy.galstar.com/"
Schedules, results, the inevitable merchandising and sponsorships. Notable for having a link to the St. Petersburg Web server. "http://www.com/goodwill/index.html"
