Latest news from the online frontier

GREEN CARD LAWYERS CLAIM COPYRIGHT TO NOTORIETY

The Green Card lawyers, Canter and Siegel, have exerted themselves to reach a new low. Joel Furr, famous net.personality, is making T-shirts with the motto "Green Card Lawyers - Spamming the Globe" to commemorate their spate of spam. Getting wind of this (they follow net.admin.policy) C & S threatened legal action, saying that they had rights to the nickname "Green Card Lawyers" and that other companies were interested in making T-shirts. Joel plans to proceed regardless, being advised that the name is not copyrightable and that he would have little trouble finding free legal help. The Tennessee Bar was notified since barratry (threatening nuisance suits) is considered unprofessional conduct. Joel Furr and T-shirt info: jfurr@acpub.duke.edu

WOODSTOCK A MEMORY, BUT THE SMOKE LINGERS ON

The Well, a venerable Bay Area online institution has put together a post-Woodstock Web site which is guaranteed to cure those withdrawal symptoms. It's also a good post-mortem trip if you weren't there. Contents include a great deal of material created live by the people who were there, including a photo album (turn of image auto download first and read the captions), the Digital Scrapbook area with over 300 personal web pages made on the fly in their tent, complete with text, photo and audio, a Live Conference area, and a Guestbook. Beware though, the site is rather slow and the pages large. "http://www.well.com/woodstock/"

INTERNET INDEX OFFERS FUN NUMBERS

Feeling bombarded by e-mail? Consider President Clinton's plight: the White House has received 200,000 e-mail messages since last summer - and with only one prosecution for sending an e-mail threat. These and similar statistics are listed on the Internet Index, modeled after "Harper's Index." Issue #2 also reveals that 1600 copies of Mosaic are downloaded from NCSA daily; 14,726 companies were registered on the Internet as of April 1994, only 10 percent of Web survey respondents were older than 40, and it was on 5/2/94 that the Internet was used to find medical information on "Northern Exposure". INTERNET CONNECTIVITY GROWS EXPLOSIVELY IN 1994

So what else is new? The just-released Internet Domain Survey, a scan of all the hosts available on the Internet, shows an overall 81% increase in machines connected since last year. The latest numbers show 3.2 million machines reachable, one million of which were added during the first six months of 1994. U.S. sites are dominated by educational (27%) and commercial (24%) institutions. The survey was performed by Mark Lottor of Network Wizards. For detailed data, "ftp://ftp.nw.com/zone", or see the Net Wizards home page "http://www.nw.com".

RWANDA WEB PAGE

The tragedy in Rwanda may be slowly loosing the glare of media spotlight but the suffering goes on. This site is an attempt to bring together numerous Internet resources dealing with Rwanda under one roof. Various political and non-political organizations are represented, such as the VOA, Amnesty International, and WHO. In addition to documents supplied by them there is also a copy of mail sent to President Clinton along with a copy of his reply. If you want to get involved, or simply stay informed, this is a good place to start. "http://www.intac.com/PubService/rwanda/"

MEANINGFUL TALK ABOUT MEANINGLESS SUFFERING

Feeling as if life has no point, existence is designed to be painful, and attempting to relate is useless? Lost opportunities, wasted time, rejection, boredom, loneliness, fear and anguish - these are the carter-topics of alt.angst. So if attempting to be cheerful doesn't work anymore, use this forum to explore your misery. Discussion is at a fairly intellectual level (recent topic: "What can you do when your partner dissects your personality like a Rubik's Cube?") with little flaming. Random whining is frowned upon. The Angst Calendar (for MS Windows), 250K of meaningless suffering, is available at "ftp://ftp.mantis.co.uk/pub/alt.angst".

ELECTRONIC "LIFE FORMS"

Artificial Life, computer-simulated life-forms that compete and reproduce, evolving in response to their environment, are the topic of comp.ai.alife. Recent threads include TIERRA (an alife environment), what life forms competing for player's attention in a MUD would be like, and whether computer viruses could evolve. If you're interested in designing artificial life forms, worried that electronic life will escape and infect the Net, or simply want to philosophize about what life is anyhow, then this is the newsgroup for you.
