The best places to netsurf this week

ELVIS LIVES ON IN CYBERSPACE

Yes, it's true. But then, we always knew he would. Now you can visit the Elvis Presley home page, a musical and visual tribute to The King. Here you'll find a virtual tour of Graceland, photographs and sound clips. Also available are two nifty Elvis Windows applications. There are no hyperlinks, however, to information about Michael and Lisa Marie. Thank you. Thank you very much. "http://128.194.15.32/~ahb2188/elvishom.html"

YET ANOTHER FROG SPILLS HIS GUTS ON WWW

Our intrepid netsurfers have uncovered another interactive frog dissection kit, this time supplied by the University of Virginia. The tutorial combines text with 60 in-line color images and 17 QuickTime movies illustrating dissection procedures and internal organs. Numerous clickable image maps provide interactive practice and review without the risk of collapse from formaldehyde fumes. This kit competes directly with Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's interactive frog dissection. The Virginian version is less software-fussy, easier to use and contains scanned photos, whereas Lawrence Berkeley Lab's frog is a realistic cartoon. Compare and contrast "http://curry.edschool.virginia.edu/~insttech/frog" with "http://george.lbl.gov/ITG.hm.pg.docs/dissect/info.html".

BEEKEEPERS, SUNDIALS, AND MIND GAMES - WHAT A NEAT HOMEPAGE

Jordan Schwartz at the University of Washington has a WWW page worthy of note. You are invited to "follow a thread" through eclectic and academic categories like Psychology, Space & Sundial Resources, Dead Rock Stars and Mind Games. Also featured are links to The BeeKeeper's page, and various online books and publications. So if you like what Jordan likes, stop by for a visit. "http://alfred1.u.washington.edu:8080/~jlks/jordan.html"

VIRTUAL TOWN ON WEB IS FUN TO ROAM THROUGH

The virtual town is a metaphor for a net resource directory with links to hundreds of sites from an original text list of 31 major attractions (flavors?). Thank your lucky surf board that the graphical interface is still "under construction;" if your net connection is 14.4 or below you could fall asleep waiting for some of the graphics to load. However even so, we feel this is a "must see" site for casual surfers and beginners on the World Wide Web. "http://www.cs.ucdavis.edu/virt-town/welcome.html"

DIG YOUR WAY THROUGH ARCHAEOLOGY LINKS ON WWW & GOPHER

ArchNet is a resource with many WWW links exploring the dusty, backbreaking world of archaeology. Buttons allow the user to quickly enter sub-pages of academic departments, geographic regions, a topical index and museums. ArchNet is fairly comprehensive, and can lead you to exhibits, like the Dead Sea Scrolls, or to archaeological sites and reports. "http://spirit.lib.uconn.edu/ArchNet/ArchNet.html" "gopher://spirit.lib.uconn.edu/11/academic/ssh/Anthropology/archnet"

INTERESTING BUSINESS SITES ON THE WEB

This new list features a maximum of 50 noteworthy businesses currently active on the Web. Although the list itself is ever-changing, typical categories include Large "Name" Companies, Small Companies, Financial Services, Legal Services and Advertising/Marketing. Written from a business perspective, this list might be a particularly helpful tool for students and teachers at schools of business and management. "http://www.rpi.edu/~okeefe/business.html"

HTMUD, DISTRIBUTED GRAPHICAL REALTIME CONFERENCING

You need Telnet and a Forms capable Mosaic to make it work (Windows v2.0a5 does NOT work according to the announcement). Each user has two windows, Web for graphics and user input, and a Telnet client window for asynchronous output and conversation. Players can move between rooms on different servers, and anyone with a Web server can build on the MUD, using Perl, so "features are easier to add than with ordinary MUDs." If you're brave and have the software capability, more info can be found at "http://www.elf.com/~phi/htmud.html"

U. OF SOUTH AFRICA WWW SERVER INCLUDES LOCAL LINKS

The University of South Africa's new WWW server features the usual information on and services provided by the University. Of more interest though are links to universities, research institutes, and assorted companies in South Africa. The local links include the University of Cape Town, the Pollution Research Group, the Electronic Membrane Information Library, and the Computing Centre for Water Research. Also offered is a listing of FTP servers at South African Universities which may be an interesting info mining resource. "http://www.unisa.ac.za/"

ONLINE TRAVEL

Click your mouse and see the world

SOUTH DAKOTA, GATEWAY TO NORTH DAKOTA

Well, not really but it's a neat headline. Whether you want to visit, move to, or investigate South Dakota, the state's new WWW site has a link for you. Included are relatively PR-propaganda-free facts and tips about life in South Dakota, the state capitol, Mt. Rushmore, and The Black Hills. Residents (including prospective ones) can benefit from the up-to-date links on legislative bills, state agencies' home pages with contact information, educational resources, and links to other sites. "http://www.state.sd.us"

BELL ATLANTIC OFFERS TRAVELERS MULTIMEDIA YELLOW PAGES

Weary travelers at several classy hotels in major cities in the U.S. can soon get their Yellow Pages questions answered on the TV set in their room. They can dial the advertiser directly, and even see or get a printed map of the advertiser's location. This all thanks to a project of Bell Atlantic and its partners. First appearing in the Washington, D.C. Marriott and Hilton hotels. A lengthy press release entitled "Bell Atlantic Directory Service" was posted to comp.dcom.telecom on August 3.

JPEGVIEW AUTHOR WRITING TRANSPARENT GIF UTILITY

Transparency is a simple utility for creating transparent GIF images in a point-and-click visual manner. Aaron Giles, the man behind the superb JPEGView graphics package is writing this program, currently in a beta version. Not very elegant yet, but quite usable. The file to look for is transparency10b3.sit.hqx. "ftp://ftp.med.cornell.edu/pub/aarong/transparency/" "http://www.med.cornell.edu/~giles/projects.html"

WWWWORM FOR THE MAC. BUT WAIT, IT'S IN FRENCH

It systematically scans the WWW and evaluate each page according to a keyword search. If the evaluation is successful, then the URL of the page is kept. Sounds great but it's written in French. However Lemieux Sebastien is looking for feedback on whether you'd be interested in something like this. If you want more info, mail him at lemieuse@ERE.UMontreal.CA
