The best places to netsurf this week

LADIES & GENTLEMEN: JOSIP BROZ TITO

Who? You know, that militantly non-aligned communist who held Yugoslavia together for 40+ years after kicking the Nazis out. So here we have this virtual Web shrine to the guy complete with texts of his speeches, tons of photos hobnobbing with other world renowned leaders, (Yassir Arafat, Idi Amin, Richard Nixon) and a section entitled "His Last Battle" reenacting his lingering death in an equally lingering photo series. Conceptually weird in some deep hind brain manner. We can't figure out if these guys are serious in their adoration or what. But then, maybe anyone who managed to hold Yugoslavia together all these years deserves a shrine. Then again, maybe not. You decide. "http://www.fer.uni-lj.si/tito/tito-eng.html"

ROADKILLS-R-US AND THE PRICE OF "BAT, FRUIT"

Somewhere between ridiculously bizarre and spectacularly inspired lies Roadkills-R-Us. Apparently it's not just a Web page; it's a way of life, and to link there is to be sucked under the wheel of its creative juggernaut. We recommend you check out the Roadkill Payment Schedule before going on to the whole history of RRU, and culminate your visit with links to either Page.bIZARRE or the Obituary Web Pages. Do yourself a favor and visit this place before life runs you over. "http://hostname.pencom.com/rru.html"

NASA'S VOLCANOLOGY INFO, PART OF "MISSION TO PLANET EARTH"

Lots of goodies about volcanoes and the Earth Observing System of satellites coming in 1998 as a major part of NASA's "Mission to Planet Earth." For educators, a series of slide sets covering "Surface & Atmospheric Effects of 1991 Eruption of Mt. Pinatubo" is available for downloading. For the rest of us, info and images on EOS activities and future plans, satellite views, FAQ from sci.geo.eos and links to related sites. "http://www.geo.mtu.edu/eos/"

ONCOLINK: A DEFINITIVE NET SITE FOR CANCER INFO

Find out about cancer and how not to get it. For cancer doctors OncoLink offers information organized by speciality. At the request of cancer patients and families it's also organized by disease. While it may be the most used site for cancer information (getting 4000 accesses/day) it also gives links to other oncology sites on the Net. The organizers believe that this Gopher/WWW server offers the best general interest cancer information anywhere, being a better organized single source than journals and less narrowly focussed than other Net sites. "http://cancer.med.upenn.edu" "gopher://cancer.med.upenn.edu"

APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE - THE SCREENWRITERS' & PLAYWRIGHTS' HOME PAGE

From Aristophanes to Alien 3, this extensive resource offers a ton of information for drama lovers, film buffs and professional writers alike. You'll find online scripts of classic and contemporary plays, film reviews, screenplays, a searchable film database, links to relevant discussion groups, plus marketing and writing tips from the pros. All in all, we give it two thumbs up. "http://www.teleport.com/~cdeemer/scrwriter.html"

SECULAR WEB: ATHEISM AND DARWIN FISH

These folks are serious about atheism. In addition to being philosophically interesting, this page is also rather entertaining. Aside from the expected newsgroup archives, FAQs, serious magazines and documents, they include links to religious satires, Heathens & Heretics at MIT, a chance to order the Darwin fish as a sticker or T-shirt, and a link to the ever-relevant "Devil's Dictionary" by Ambrose Bierce (in HTML courtesy of Project Gutenberg). Naturally there are also links to religious servers. "http://freethought.tamu.edu/"

AEON FLUX PAGE OF INTEREST TO FANS AND ARTISTS

Aeon Flux is the lithe and lethal heroine best known for her exploits in short animated segments on MTV's Liquid Television. This site holds two pieces of text which are of interest to fans of this often surreal work. An interview with Peter Chung, the character's creator, covers his original concept and his plans for her continuing adventures. Also of interest is a copy of the original proposal Peter sent to MTV pitching the series. The interview makes absorbing reading as it delves into the thinking behind the series. Artwork also available. "http://sunsite.unc.edu/otis/notes/aflux/aeonflux.html"

THE U.S. LIBERTARIAN PARTY WEB AND FTP SITES

America's third largest political party now has a number of sites on the Internet. Their official site has info on Libertarian history, philosophy and positions, directories and lists, official documents, current activities and membership. There is also a list of e-mail addresses for their national, state and local officers, committees, managers and staff. "http://www.lp.org/lp/" "ftp://ftp.digex.net/pub/access/lphq/lphq.html"

U.S. NAVY SAILS THE INFO SEA, YOU CAN SURF IN IT'S WAKE

This site, the Navy's official Web presence, turns out to be a fascinating surfing source for the curious military science research junkie. The home page has links to a number of Navy research labs and operational facilities worldwide, some of them classified (those won't let you connect). You can be thrilled by such tantalizing sites as the Space and Naval Warfare System Command (home of the boldly named SPAWARRIOR newsletter), read the Navy News Service which brings you Marine Corps, Medical, and European sections, or go diving into other Dept. of Defense sites. "http://www.navy.mil/"

ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE LIST OF RESOURCES ON FTP

The prolific John Makulowich has given the net community another of his excellent lists. This one, Alternative Medicine, is a list of newsgroups, discussion groups, gopher servers, and web servers which have information on alternative medicine. He also gives some pointers about how he developed the list for those who would like to develop their own lists of resources. It is available at: "ftp://ftp.clark.net/pub/journalism/altmed.txt"

INFORMATION & COMMUNICATIONS LAW COMPACT COMPENDIUM

Washington, D.C. law firm of Pepper & Corazzini has lots of info for those interested in current legal issues related to broadcast, cable, common carriers, PCS and information law, including staff opinions. "http://www.iis.com/p-and-c" "gopher://gopher.iis.com/11/p-and-c" "ftp://ftp.iis.com/companies/p-and-c"

What's new with the commercial services

YOUR PRIVACY, YOUR FRIENDS' PRIVACY, AND COMPUSERVE

The Tampa Tribune (8/15/94) reports that a CompuServe-offered service called CompuTrace will find the last known address for any person in the U.S. You can also find out how long someone has had a particular phone number or lived at a particular address and who else lives there. Information on how to obtain driving records in every state is also available. Scary stuff. CompuServe is not (yet?) an evil empire, but there are plenty of such out there. Be paranoid. Be very paranoid.

NCSA WEB SERVER V1.3 FOR WINDOWS FINAL VERSION

Playing in a Windows 3.1 or Windows For Workgroups 3.11 theater near you! Those wishing to put up their own Web site in a PC Windows environment will be interested in the latest Web server for Microsoft Windows. It closely follows the NCSA "httpd" v1.3 Unix Web server, including common log file format, automatic directory indexing and access authorization, etc. Impressive features including true multi-threading of up to 8 simultaneous users. Important info and file pointer at "http://www.alisa.com/win-httpd/" "ftp://ftp.alisa.com/pub/win-httpd/whttpd13.zip"

PROGRAMMING LIBRARY HELPS TO CREATE WEB GIFS ON THE FLY

Created to allow graphs, charts and the like to be generated on the fly for use on the World wide Web, but is suitable for any application in which custom GIFs are useful. It is a library (gd 1.0) for use by programs that wish to create GIF-format diagrams, graphs, charts, and so on, and includes functions for loading and manipulating existing GIF and XBM images. Free, but give the authors credit and mail them improvements to include in future versions. "http://siva.cshl.org/gd/gd.html" "ftp://isis.cshl.org/pub/gd/"

EMAIL FORMS 2.0 PROVIDES SIMPLE E-MAIL FORMS SETUP

It's a C program which can give you professional looking e-mail forms on your Web documents. Users can mail the accounts you choose directly from Forms capable browsers. You'll need a CGI-compliant server (like NCSA or CERN httpd) and an ASCII standard compiler (e.g. gcc). Simple to set up, secure, generally a cool piece of software. Thank to Thomas Boutell. "http://siva.cshl.org/email/index.html"

WEBSTAT V1.4 USEFUL FEATURES, WEIRD LANGUAGE

The package promises (and probably delivers) a raft of useful features such as a list of usages per provided service, top ten of accessing domains, list of accessing countries, and list of accesses per file (page). However the author in a fit of misguided loyalty chose to write it in some weird hybrid of Perl and TCL called Python. We don't know anything about it, and frankly don't have the time to learn yet another programming language. But the Python home page does have some sounds from Monty Python so it can't be all bad. Python: "http://www.cwi.nl/ftp/python/index.html" WebStat: "http://www.pegasus.esprit.ec.org/people/sijben/statistics/advertisment.html"

COMBINED LOG FILE SYSTEM FOR WWW, GOPHER, AND FTP

Designed to enable the automatic handling of log files generated by info-server daemons (ftp, gopher, http...) for Internet archives. It does this by providing a combined format for the transfers, and converting each of the raw log files into this combined format. The results are then stored by date/time, summarized and compressed. A complex system, aimed at administrators but apparently it works well once configured. "ftp://unix.hensa.ac.uk/tools/www/logtools/logtools-1.0.tar.gz" "http://www.hensa.ac.uk/tools/www/logtools/logtools-1.0.tar.gz"

MAC HTML EDITOR HAS TONS OF FEATURES

HTML Editor (original name, isn't it?) is a semi-WYSIWYG editor for (surprise) editing HTML documents on the Mac. You need a 68020 or higher machine with System 7 and 2 Megs of RAM. Handles more then 32K text, has the usual insertion of HTML elements through button clicks, editable user tag palette, quick document preview, auto-launching Mosaic or MacWeb, and a raft of other useful features. "ftp://cs.dal.ca/giles/HTML_Editor_1.0.sit.hqx"

WINTAPESTRY FULLY FUNCTIONAL NET ACCESS DEMO FOR WINDOWS

The press release says it all: "WinTapestry is a fully functional Gopher+, CSO, and WWW client that will be included in SuperHighway Access for Windows, a soon to be released Internet connectivity product that will be available from Frontier Technologies Corporation." Kind of a Beta+ release. They want feedback at SuperHighway@FrontierTech.COM. "ftp://winftp.cica.indiana.edu/pub/pc/win3/uploads/WINTAP-1.EXE"

MINUET: GRAPHICAL PC BASED INTERNET CLIENT PACKAGE

Minuet is an integrated PC package that includes modules for POP3 e-mail, Gopher, Telnet, Usenet News and FTP. It has a mouse-driven graphical user interface via the TurboVision graphics libraries. It is a TCP/IP client that runs over any type of TCP/IP network including ethernet and SLIP, and works with either static or dynamically-assigned IP addresses.
