Back in 1995, when the e-commerce ecosystem first came to life, we presented a nascent web of the players and their interrelationships. Since then, more than a generation of technologies and players have moved across this stage.

Here is our original "web" of companies, color-coded by niche and clustered around partnerships and alliances. In the last three years, some have prospered while others slipped into oblivion. Click on the labels to see what has become each of them.

As an interesting note, our original map was a gif image about 130kbytes in size. The advent of javascript and cascading style sheets has simplified this into DHTML.
